East Coast Trip by Roselyn Newton, 8th grade homeroom teacher
Fifty seventh and eighth grade students and parents, including seventeen travelers from Concordia Seattle, recently completed a six-day trip to Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and Washington, D.C. It was a trip of awesome proportions. The trip was planned to give students an understanding of the sacrifices given by many to enable you and me to live in a country free to worship our Lord and Savior and have personal freedoms protected by our constitution.
In Philadelphia we visited Independence Hall where our constitution was written; in Gettysburg we learned of the thousands who gave their lives to keep our country united and to end slavery. In Washington, D.C. we saw our nation’s Capitol where our constitution is acted upon and preserved. We toured the home of George Mason, author of our Bill of Rights.
We also drove through Amish country in Pennsylvania and had a home cooked meal at Barbara Fisher’s, an Amish woman. We toured the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and the Maryland State House where we learned how President George Washington passed the presidency on to newly elected John Adams instead of making himself president for life.
We were granted the privilege of touring the White House. Yes, President Obama was working in the West Wing, but, no, he was not able to meet with us. We did see Sunny, the Obama’s second dog. She was being brought inside, happy and wagging her tail.
It was an incredible trip, and there is so much more we did and experienced. Here is the big take-away from this trip: we are indeed blessed to live in this country.

Thank You Volunteers
It was a busy month with our Teacher Appreciation Week, Book Fair, and Grandparents Day. Thank you to all our parent volunteers for making these events special, especially for our Grandparents/Special Person Day. These are memories they cherish and then look forward to attending again year after year!
Book Fair
If any family did not get a chance to make a purchase or two from the book fair, there is still time to do so. You may shop online. Go to www.scholastic.com/fair. From there you need to “find your fair.” You will see Hope Lutheran School is the list of available fairs. This option will be open to you through May 29th.
Thank you everyone for your support of the fair as we exceeded our sales from last year. We are so grateful for you and our Grandparents!
