A Day in the Life of a Preschool Student by Christina Figgins, Preschool Director
As we begin our 2015-2016 school year, I’ll share a glimpse of what our preschool morning looks like. At 8:15 AM, the students arrive. Mr. Nibbles, our class guinea pig, is anxiously waiting both for the kids to arrive and for some carrots or greens. Soon a line forms to feed Mr. Nibbles. A table is set up with play dough where kids are creating ice cream cones, snowmen and pancakes. Some kids are at the big oval carpet using blocks to construct roads and ramps for toy cars. There are races to see whose car is fastest. Over in the reading area a group has formed around preschool assistant Mrs. Olson. She is reading the Little Critter book, called “I’m Sorry,” for the third time that day. The big Dinosaur book is brought over to me, and the kids laugh as I try to read the long dinosaur names. One of the kids makes up a new dinosaur name “the crocogator.” This is my new favorite word! In the kitchen area, espresso and pizza are being made. Old cell phones are used to call friends and teachers in the classroom to take their orders. And, they deliver! The art area is buzzing with kids coloring and choosing stickers to make cards for their family members.
The interesting part about our morning is that to a visitor it may look like we are just playing, but there is so much learning taking place. By taking care of Mr. Nibbles we are learning about nutrition and the kinds of food he eats. The kids check his water bottle and make sure he has plenty of hay. Molding play dough into objects enriches imagination and is a great tactile experience. Block building is a great way to learn about balance, spatial awareness, and gravity. The kids test car speeds by adjusting ramp heights. Reading stories over and over develops recognition and recall. And along the way we are learning how to be at school, follow rules and routine, take turns and get along with friends. Wow, we’re busy learning!
