In this World by Jonathan Kopecky, Youth Minister
Hi everyone, I’m Jonathan Kopecky, one of two DCEs on staff, which stands for the Director of Christian Education, aka the youth pastor. This last month Jesus directed me to have the youth study one verse: John 16:33. It says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
The first week we talked about trouble. In this world trouble always seems to be lurking. When your students walk into a classroom and are about to take a huge math test or when they lace up their cleats and are about to step onto the field, they could be in trouble if they make a wrong decision. Sometimes your students could be in trouble because of their own actions. Trouble is always lurking, however Jesus is always present. When we find ourselves in trouble or in situations where we have caused trouble, we can seek Jesus for strength and forgiveness and he continually welcomes us. We talked about how trouble is always there, but Jesus will always be with us.
The next week we talked about pressure. In this world we have all kinds of pressure. Students feel pressure from teachers, peers, and family members; pressures from church to act and be a certain way; and pressures from Satan to act out in sin. However, pressure helps us grow. Jesus was tempted by Satan for 40 days in the wilderness and he grew. There’s a needed balance with pressure. If we have too much pressure, like wind to a matchstick, it gets blown out; however, if there is a good group of mentors or a solid peer group, or a youth group your students are connected to, and we stay rooted in Jesus, like wind to a campfire, it sets it ablaze. When we gather in Jesus’ name we are a fire that can handle any pressures.
Our third session was about unrest. In this world there have always been injustices, and they seem overwhelming especially now. Everyone is busy fighting for what’s right because we long for peace. It’s good to have passions and agendas, but we need to keep the focus on Jesus. He alone brings peace and righteousness. Let’s ask him to break our hearts for what breaks his. Then in response we can join him in what he’s already up to, rather than working alone.
Lastly, we talked about hope. In this world we can have hope because we aren’t alone in the world; we are God’s children in his Kingdom. Hope is being down 99-1 and thinking you have a chance to win because Jesus is the 100 point play that will end the game 99-101. We forget that Jesus will always fight for us, even when we see loss. But Jesus defeated death! Let us hold onto hope, even when we don’t see it.
Hopefully this quick summary of what God has been up to in the lives of our youth is an encouragement to you! Oh, by the way, is your student in Ms. Kuhn’s class? We welcome current 5th graders to be part of our RüT youth group this summer. RüT is for all 6th-8th grade students, which includes students for all our West Seattle middle schools. Graduation Ceremonies – COVID-19 Protocols
We are thankful to invite guests to our graduation and closing ceremonies this year. Our preference is to limit guests to immediate family members only. If desired, families of graduates may additionally invite two other groups of loved ones – for example, a set of grandparents, or a beloved neighbor. In order to allow room for social distancing for everyone, please do not invite more than two additional groups. While graduates and speakers may unmask if desired, all guests must remain masked in the sanctuary during the ceremony. Thank you for your support!
