Pippi Longstocking by KristenOkabayashi
Last week, I had the pleasure of joining our Hope2nd grade students as they journeyed to Seattle Childrens Theater to see the musical “PippiLongstocking”. I have attended many productions at SCT and have not ever seen a production I didn’t love, and so when Ms.Tagge thought she might need another driver, I quickly raised my hand to help out.
The play “PippiLongstocking” is based on the books by writer AstridLindgren, originally printed back in the 1940s. The original books about Pippi were some of my own favorite stories growing up – if you have not read one, you should try to. Pippi herself is a magical character; she grew up on a pirate ship with her father, and so she is unaware of many social norms and lives in a house without parents but with a pet monkey and a spotted horse. She is full of life and energy and has a low tolerance for stuffiness; she is a lot of fun to be around and a great friend.
I personally really enjoyed the musical but part of my enjoyment was watching the students around me. They laughed hysterically at some of the scenes, especially one involving a whoopee cushion at a tea party – what 2nd grader would not find that funny? Their faces were full of wonder as the musical crew seamlessly arranged different scenery – one student asked me how did Pippi climb on top of her house without falling? I don’t know either.
Pippi has a lesson for all of us – live life fully, be a good friend, and don’t take yourself too seriously.
