8th Grade Olympia Trip by Roselyn Newton
It is our responsibility as teachers and parents to educate our children for citizenship in a democratic society. Learning to read, write, and do math is certainly the beginning of this process. Learning about our government’s operations is also part of this process.
Our eighth grade trip on January 22nd to tour the Capitol was the richest of trips. Students toured the Capitol building, the Temple of Justice, and the Governor’s mansion. They met with Mr. Michael Shaw, Alexander’s father, who is a lobbyist. He explained his work, how he gains support for a bill, how he works with both the House committees and the Senate committees for agreement on vocabulary and how both sides hopefully agree to a compromise. It is a high-energy job, requiring hours and hours of work to help our great state of Washington become a better place. Eighth graders also met with all three legislatures from District 34: Rep. Eileen Cody, Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, and Sen. Sharon Nelson. All three hold important committee positions in education, transportation, and budget. The three described their career paths. Eighth graders visited the offices of the Governor, Secretary of State, and Treasurer.
In the Temple of Justice the eighth graders learned about the work of the Supreme Court, and they participated in a mock trial. Students became the Appellate, the Respondents, the Bailiff, and the Supreme Court judges. They ruled in the case and then compared their results and reasoning with the results and reasoning of the Washington State Supreme Court.
Finally, the eighth graders toured the main level of the Governor’s Mansion. Here they learned about the history and function of the Mansion. They did not see Governor Inslee, but apparently he was holding a committee meeting in the building because they had to maintain silence to avoid disturbing his work.

Website Update by Sally Heit
This year we excitedly redesigned our school web site, and are pleased that it is fitting the needs of both our parents and visitors. As with most technological projects there are usually some glitches, and we have appreciated the feedback we have received from you about some of the things that have not been working properly, such as the calendar. I am pleased to inform you that through the diligent efforts of Jeremiah Easter at Oly Web Development and Kevin Jones, our Technology Director, we have implemented a solution that should make looking at the calendar on a daily, and even hourly, basis easy and accurate.
When you click on the Calendar icon on the home page you are taken directly to a current monthly view of the school calendar which also incorporates the sports calendar. If you only want to see the basketball schedule, simply go to Agenda in the upper right corner and deselect “Hope Lutheran School Calendar” and you will see only the schedule for basketball or any other sport going on at the time.
We appreciate your patience as we have been working through this issue, and please continue to give us your feedback. Our site is not completely finished, and will continue to be updated in the coming months.
LEST Update
One last updated LEST schedule is going home today in the Tuesday communication envelopes to grade 5-8 families. We are also sending home information regarding the updated cafeteria at Concordia University’s campus. Go Eagles!
