Our School Family by Kristen Okabayashi
My family and I went over to Lake Chelan for spring break, where we have a timeshare at Wapato Point. Lake Chelan is a gorgeous lake and usually very busy, but I think because our break was on the later side this year, it was not busy at all when we went over. We had the huge indoor pool there almost to ourselves, and it was so private that we were able to have an Easter egg hunt, multiple Nerf gun battles, and lots of Frisbee and football in the big grassy areas without having to share.
On one of our vacation days, the boys and I decided to have a late brunch at a little restaurant called Blueberry Hills in the tiny town of Manson. There were some other groups of people there but like the rest of our trip, it was pretty quiet. Imagine my surprise when a couple walks up to me and it’s two of our Hope school grandparents! They are a couple I know fairly well because they come to school events regularly to watch their two granddaughters Hannah and Summer. They were also on vacation, so it was so fun to run into them there! We had a good chat and caught up a little.
One of my very favorite parts of my job here at Hope is getting to know not just our students, but the whole family. I love running into our families out and about West Seattle, and even running into grandparents in Lake Chelan! Our Hope extended families become part of our Hope community as well. I hope to see many grandparents and other special people at our upcoming Grandparents Day next Wednesday, May 14! We have a special morning prepared with chapel, brunch sponsored by PTH, our spring musical, and classrooms visits. Thank you grandparents for being part of us!
Oso Chapel Offerings
Thank you to our students for their generous chapel offerings to support the Oso landslide recovery efforts! Throughout the month of April, students donated $608.67, which we will donate to the United Way Oso fund. We appreciate it!

Mattie spends her days avoiding chores and making plans to turn the family business into the finest Philadelphia has ever seen. But then the fever breaks out. Disease sweeps the streets, destroying everything in its path and turning Mattie’s world upside down. At her feverish mother’s insistence, Mattie flees the city with her grandfather.
