Life Lessons from Music by Thad Franklin, Music Teacher

I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t surrounded by music. Waking up each day is an exciting adventure simply because my job is to play and talk about music all day long. I have been fortunate to take lessons and perform with some of the world’s greatest musicians and I can tell you they feel just as excited as I do. Here are a few important life lessons I have learned from music and the incredible musicians I have worked with.

1. Nobody is better than anyone else. In the end it all comes down to expressing your own unique voice. Everyone else has their own understanding of the world which is just as valid as yours.

2. Failure is important. As a musician learns an instrument or new song, inevitably he or she will play lots of “wrong” notes. I love these notes. It is only when we are able to fail that we are ready to learn.

3. Appreciate the entire story. Music is full of subtle nuances. Quiet notes amplify loud sections, dissonant notes create tension that resolves into consonant sounds, sharp staccatos unexpectedly break long legato passages. This is how musicians tell a story, and these stories are a lot like life. Life is full of big moments, little moments, and in between moments.  It is not always glamorous. It is not always dull. Most of the time, it just is. If you can appreciate every small moment for what it is, the big moments will become much more meaningful.

Hope Lutheran Summer Day Camps

Registration is ending soon for our summer day camps! We have just a few spaces left in both programs. Our Preschool program is for children who have just finished a P3 or PreK program and the other is for students who have just finished Kindergarten through age 12. We have a fun summer planned with lots of field trips, outdoor activities, water fun, cooking, and craft projects. Information packets can be found in the main office or on the Hope website. Registration is due by June 2nd, so be sure to get it turned in soon!

Please contact Mairi Seraile at mseraile@hopeseattle.org if you have any questions.

Annual Book Exchange for All Grades – June 5

We will be having our annual book exchange this year on Thursday June 5. Please help your student to pick out up to 10 books at or around their reading level to bring in for the exchange. Please bring the books in a brown paper bag clearly marked with your student’s name by Thursday, June 5th. There is no criterion for participation as in the past; all students P3 through 8th grade are welcome to participate.

PIP Opportunities for Fall 2014/15

American Legion Parade July 19th: Hope Lutheran School will again be participating in the American Legion Grand Parade July 19th and welcomes school families to walk with or ride the school bus, pass out candy and show our Eagle spirit to the West Seattle community! We are looking for parent and student volunteers to help decorate and drive the bus the morning of the parade, wear the Eagle mascot (perfect for a student), pass out candy, carry the school banner, wave poms poms and have fun! If you are interested, please call the school office or email Sally Heit @ sheit@hopeseattle.org for more information. Go Eagles!

PIP Notice

All PIP Hours MUST be worked by May 31st and submitted to the school by June 6th to be credited toward the current school year. Any hours worked after June 1st will be credited to the following school year. Unfulfilled hours at the end of the program year will be billed at $20 each, based on ¼ hour increments. Student’s report cards, transcripts and diplomas will not be released until all outstanding fees are paid in full. Contact Mrs. Wallace with any questions regarding your PIP statement.

The Mighty Mite

One of the Arch books, Christian children’s book, is entitled “A Penny is Everything”.  It is the beloved Bible story of the Widow’s Mite.  Jesus shared this story with his listeners to teach them to give with a HEART OF LOVE as the widow did.  The amount is not the most important part of giving.  The widow gave a “mite”.  She must have loved the Lord a lot as this was all that she had.  Love is the most important part of giving.      By the school office is a large collection box for your small Mite boxes.  Small boxes for you to use to collect your Mites are by the big box.  All of the money that is given with love and cheerfulness will be a blessing to needful people all over the world.  Think about that!  What other charity reaches so far, so faithfully, and so fruitfully?      Your Mite box is waiting for you.  Simply pick it up, fill it up, and bring it up….to school, put it into the Mite collection box and join in the loving work of helping needful people all over the world.  Pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars, checks are all gladly received and passed on to mission projects which serve to share God’s love and His promises with people of the world.
