WOH For Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015

LEST Perspective by Mary Norton, 3rd grade teacher

Another Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST) has passed and it is such a pleasure to talk to former students and reminisce about their own experience. “Remember when I made that 3 point shot?” “Remember when we won 1st place?” The LEST memories become part of our story at Hope. Our current students and families now have their own LEST memories.

Students and families from Lutheran schools around the Northwest gather and compete for 3 days. LEST has been celebrated for 52 years. It started as a basketball tournament and has since evolved into a celebration of sport, academics, and the fine arts.

Each year, we have the privilege of choosing a champion of character from our school. This student is nominated from our school as a person who strives to model a life of integrity, respect, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. This year, 8th grader Hannah M. is our Champion of Character. I have personally had the pleasure of teaching her in 3rd grade but also coaching her as part of our drama program. Hannah is the quiet leader though sets a strong example for her class and others. She consistently goes above and beyond in her schoolwork, achieving honor roll status each quarter but even more importantly, setting a foundation for life-long learning. Hannah’s drama coach Sandra Scragg says about her, “Outbursts of laughter are frequent during drama class, and it’s often due to Hannah’s incredibly clever sense of humor, coupled with a rare talent for character acting, as she impersonates a myriad of different people from different walks of life. Hannah is a supremely talented actress, but that is not the only thing that makes her such a pleasure to have in class. Hannah is conscientious, always being the first to have her lines learned, no matter how many different productions she is in, and she can be relied upon to have her complete costume ready and present at every dress rehearsal and performance. She is consistent – I can always rely on first-rate effort from her, no matter if she is feeling tired or isn’t well and I just love watching her natural exuberance bubble up when she is acting out a particularly funny part. She genuinely cares for others and this care is demonstrated in her leadership qualities as she directs groups of younger students. Hannah is my “go-to” student and I will miss her more than words can say next year when she goes to high school.”

It has been my pleasure to watch Hannah grow and spread her “wings” at Hope and try new activities. She is a great example of what LEST is about. All students have an opportunity to participate, gain confidence, and make memories.
