The Adult Table and the Kids Table by Jonathan Kopecky, Hope Youth Minister

Are there adult tables and kids tables when your family gathers for special events? When you gather for Christmas, Thanksgiving or Easter, do the kids and adults eat at separate tables? In theory, everyone is eating the same meal, sharing stories, laughing and having fun, but the two tables are having very different experiences – separate experiences.

We did this in my family growing up. We did it mostly because there wasn’t enough room, so we had to split up. But as we got older, the kids table wanted to sit with the adults. We’d finish dinner and join our parents, sitting on their laps, listening to their conversation. Eventually, we became old enough to sit at the big table.

I’ve been using a program called “Sticky Faith” in my youth work this year. In relation to the “adult table” and the “kid table” at church, one youth in the Sticky Faith research lamented, “So, it was kind of… I don’t like this word, but for lack of a better one, segregated, in the sense of the high school students have their thing and the adults have their thing.” Kara Powell, one of the authors of the Sticky Faith books, says, “And that segregation is causing students to shelve their faith.”

It causes youth to “shelf their faith,” because they don’t learn how to articulate their faith. They miss out on learning how to communicate with adults and how they communicate with each other. They miss out on stories and all the other interactions parents have over dinner.

I personally think youth and adults should have “outlets” where they can voice feeling, concerns and questions; however, are there events at home, where we need to raise the kid’s table up or give them a booster seat, so we can do life together? So we can have shared experiences. So we can walk in the hope of Jesus, together.

Luke 18:15-17 “People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”

Raising Up Smart Savers, Sustaining Our School

Teaching children the value of sharing, saving and spending money is an important step for us as parents. We can help them in a way that also benefits our school. Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) offers a Young Investors Club, specially designed for children through age 18. This program offers premium investment rates (currently 3.5%) on balances up to $1,000 and provides lots of teaching tools. All LCEF investments help fund loans for ministries like outreach centers, churches and schools, like ours. Now, by opening new investments, our school family can help to earn a rebate for Hope’s LCEF loan to help pay for programs or capital improvements, whatever is needed most. Brochures and applications with more information about the Young Investors Club are included in your Tuesday envelope. See Shari Wallace for more information or visit http://www.lcef.org/yi_club/. Mail completed applications to LCEF, PO Box 229009, St. Louis, MO 63122.
