Hope in the Community
As we celebrate Lutheran Schools Week, this year especially we are encouraging our students to consider not just how we are a part of our community and world, but how we can be a blessing to those around us. Throughout the fall and winter, Hope students and families participated in numerous giving projects, and we realize that sometimes if can feel like a lot. And yet, these projects have made a tremendous positive impact on others and our students.
One highlight was that our middle school students were asked by middle school faith teacher Mrs. Kunkel to donate their OWN money towards “Goats for Ghana”. This is a project where 100% of the donations go directly to purchase goats for singles mothers in Ghana, to help sustain their families. Our middle school students donated $1200 from their own money to purchase 25 goats, something that will impact those families forever.
In addition, the food collected through the school food drive, the gifts donated through the adoption of families in each classroom, tags taken off the giving tree, and donations of money all directly benefited the West Seattle community most of us live in, schools in particular. By working with Hope Church’s Human Care Ministry (HCM) Director, Elissa Sommer, we were able to help many families with food, bus and gas money, or a warm coat.
Please read this message of thanks from Elissa Sommer: “HCM is so appreciative to all for your donations of time, money and items. With your help, this Christmas we were able to provide:
- Gifts for 317 children, 60 Senior Citizens, and 28 other individuals
- Bicycles for 15 children
- Gift bags for 66 Single Mom’s and 3 Single Dads
- A crib and supplies for a 17 year old mom that had her baby in December
- 100 plastic shoebox size tubs filled with food and essentials for people who are homeless
- A meal on Christmas Eve for people who are homeless
- Gifts and assistance for 26 people in our Hope family.
What you give touches others’ lives in so many ways. Thank You!”
This week, students will put together food bags for people who are homeless and distribute goody baskets to some of our wonderful West Seattle neighbors as a thank you. Through these and many other projects, Hope is thankful to be able to encourage our students to be active in their community, aware of the needs of others, and empowered to help.

We would like to show appreciation to our neighbors around the community by creating and delivering a Hope goodie basket to 24 neighbors (two to three per class). We would love to have student support Tuesday or Wednesday night this week as the assigned “homework” will be to bring homemade treats for a neighbor. Please bring in one dozen packable treats of some sort (cookies, etc.). Thanks for your help!

Box Tops Treasure Chest Campaign
We are hoping to increase our Box Tops this year to help buy much needed supplies for our Hope Preschool Program. Box Tops are on several products most of us already buy including cereal, Kleenex, some baking mixes, etc. Time to collect them and turn them in! For the next few weeks, we are doing a Treasure Chest campaign. Fill up a Treasure Chest sheet (coming home today in the Tuesday envelope), bring it in to the office and your child can pick a prize out of the treasure chest. Thanks for your help in this important ongoing fundraiser for Hope!
Auction Update – Next Meeting 2/18
Our next auction meeting will be February 18 at 6:30 pm in the church Commons. We’ll be focusing on getting as many donations as we can to the committee by March 18th. With any auction, last minute donations are a given, but we do want to get as many as we can by that date. We’ll also get updates on decorations, raffles, class projects, teacher experiences and going over details of the event.
Anyone looking for some PIP hours? Below is a list of tasks we need help with:
Drop Auction letter and procurement form at Costco Customer Service.
Pick up donation at West Side Music Academy between Mon-Fri, 3pm to 7pm.
Click here to access an electronic procurement form, auction letter and thank you letter as well as a list of businesses that still need follow up. Even if you take one or two, that gets us much closer to making our $85,000 goal at the Gala.
