Art in the Classroom by Nancy Tagge, 2nd grade teacher
Our second grade class enjoys many kinds of art activities. While most of us enjoy making art, did you know that research shows there are many important skills that students also learn while creating art? Some of those include motor skills (especially in younger students), language development as students describe their art, decision making (what art tool should I use? Which color? How should I design it), visual learning (3D instead of some learning which is 2D), and of course inventiveness.
Recently Claire Engelbrecht, a guest artist, led the 2nd grade class in making a mural of African savanna animals. Claire grew up in India, the child of a Lutheran missionary. She now works as a speech therapist with preschool children. Claire has a gift and passion for art and enjoys using it to help children appreciate God’s creation.
Our students learned about color and texture while making the background of the mural in colors of the African savanna. They worked with different types of lines–straight, curved, repeated, geometric, and organic–while each decorating a different animal with pastels. When finished, the animals were added to the background in an abstract design, and the completed mural was displayed in the hallway. The students had a great time experiencing the elements of art.
