Creating Intelligence by Mary Norton, 3rd Grade Teacher
I saw an interesting quote the other day: “Creativity is intelligence having fun”. One can walk in the school halls and classrooms and see the evidence of “intelligence having fun”. Our PTH sponsored artist in residence, Theresa Anderson, is providing insight and projects inspired by artists such as Klimt, Kandinsky, and more. Each student brings their own reaction to the artist. Color combinations, skills, and materials are explored. I personally learned that adding baby oil to pastels can create a watercolor effect.
Students who research and write papers and stories are connecting new ideas to facts and imaginations. We have math students solving design problems using all the operations and creating answers using formulas. In robotics, our students use their intelligence to program and build robots.
It is essential to give students a chance to experiment, design, and create. We learn that our failures and mistakes are lessons in how not to do something or create a window of discovering a new way of doing something. Come visit the halls and classrooms during parent/teacher conferences to see intelligence having fun.
