Keeping your head on straight by Kristen Okabayashi
I have written previously about the challenges my oldest son Ryan has faced with back-to-back ACL repairs and the long road to recovery. While it was hard for him to miss track and football seasons, his favorite sport is basketball, and so missing that has been even more difficult for him and for those of us who love him! To add to that, last year his team at Seattle Lutheran High School took third place in the state, and with almost all the starters returning to the team this year, hopes were high of the team finishing even higher this year.
Coached by our own Brett Kapels, the team finished up their regular season winning their league with only one loss the entire season, and headed off to state playoffs in Spokane a couple weeks ago, one of just 8 teams left. It was a magical season and the team was playing at a high level. And then in the first game, the team faced the number one ranked team in the state, and while the game was tight, in the last few seconds the entire season crashed to a stop as the other team had a 5 point lead. Our players were so disappointed, and I’m sure that Coach Kapels had a lot of emotion and thoughts running through his mind in those moments, knowing that with the loss, it would not be possible to finish higher than 4th place.
And yet, with all that was happening in those final moments of the game, Brett had the presence of mind to substitute Ryan into the game, knowing that Ryan would most likely not get to play a competitive game again. In my mind, this is what separates him from most coaches. He is a competitive coach and I know the impending loss was weighing very hard on him, and yet he still chose to step outside of the moment and honor Ryan’s past contributions to the team by subbing him in. His actions speak well of him as a person, and this mom appreciates it! He also won “Coach of the Year” in the league for the second year in a row, an amazing feat, and it is very deserving.
