Music’s Impact on Learning by Thad Franklin, Music Director
In the past few years, neuroscience has given us groundbreaking information about how we process the world around us. By studying our brains in real time neuroscientists have made significant discoveries such as proving physical activity improves cognitive flexibility, motivation is tied to the strength of brain connectivity, and that male and female brains are more alike than we previously thought. I would like to share a few of my favorite facts that neuroscience has revealed about musicians.
- Musicians respond to visual cues in their environment around 300-800 milliseconds faster than those without music training.
- Children with as little as 1-5 years of music training remember 20% more vocabulary words read to them from a list. The implications of this are staggering considering that highly developed verbal memory skills allow students to process and remember more information during speeches and lectures.
- Practicing and performing music engages both hemispheres of the brain equally. Music strengthens the Corpus Callosum which is the neural bridge that shares information between hemispheres. Musicians with only 7 years of training have a significantly larger Corpus Callosum than the general population. Ultimately this means trained musicians are more likely to be excellent problem solvers who can simultaneously use logical, creative, and emotional methods and concepts to engage the world around them.
- The benefits our brains receive from learning a musical instrument have not been found in any other activity. Neuroscientists have studied the brains of people doing complicated mathematics, reading, playing sports, and countless other activities. While all of these are wonderful in their own way, nothing so far has come close to the benefits of studying music.
Here is a short TED video that expounds on this information: https://youtu.be/R0JKCYZ8hng
I am blessed to lead our music programs at Hope and appreciate the support from the administration and parents.
