Words of Hope for Jan. 10, 2017
Cranes, Goats and Chickens by Sara Kunkel, Middle School Teacher
Our middle school students at Hope are full of love and want to make a difference in the world. It inspires me every day. During Faith class, we offer several opportunities for students to share their love through various service projects.
Cranes
Earlier in the year, we learned about an inspiring middle school girl here in West Seattle who is battling brain cancer – Awesome Avery. We prayed for her and the idea organically came out of our prayers to make origami cranes for her. There is a Japanese proverb that says that if you make 1,000 cranes for someone, the recipient of the cranes can make a wish. Our students made 2,000 origami cranes, which are not easy to make. Our students shared hope and love with Awesome Avery. Please continue to keep her in your prayers as she fights against cancer.
(Editor’s note: Avery had surgery last week to remove her brain tumor and miraculously they were able to remove 100% of it! She is doing amazingly well and we are thankful!)
Goats and chickens
Before Christmas, I challenged all of the middle school students to give of their own money to buy goats and chickens through World Vision for families in need in other countries. Our Hope students showed up every day with portions of their savings and allowance, sharing with me that they were planning to spend the money on themselves but thought better of that and would rather make a difference in the world. Our students raised $930. One member of our church was so inspired by their generosity that $400 of the money was matched. They will be able to buy 13 Goats and 26 Chickens to love people across the world. WOW!!
I teach middle school because middle school kids are THE BEST!! Our students want to make a difference in the world, in their communities. I am grateful for the opportunity to walk along side these students as they spread their love.

School Directory – Coming Home Today
Please accept our sincere apologies for getting the school directory out so late. We do have a new database program that our directory is being drawn from so our formatting is different from previous years. Every effort has been made to publish a complete directory. Please contact Mrs. Wallace at swallace@hopeseattle.org for any additions, deletions, or corrections. We will list any changes in our Words of Hope. Please honor the privacy of this directory as it is intended for the use of our school faculty and families only.
Clothing Drive – Tomorrow is the Last Day for the Drive!
Donate your gently used clothing, shoes, and handbags (please no socks or undergarments) to Hope Lutheran School! Bring your clothing donations to the drop off box in the lobby by January 11th. Label your bags with your student’s grade as a special prize will be awarded to the classroom that brings in the most donations (determined by average articles of clothing per student). Currently 4th Grade is in the lead!
Seahawk Support – Friday, January 13
The Seahawks are moving on in the playoffs so to celebrate students may wear Seahawk apparel or Seahawk colors of blue and green again this Friday to show support for our Hawks. This is an optional spirit day and NOT a free dress day, so students not wearing Seahawk apparel or colors will need to come in school uniforms as usual. Go Seahawks!
Re-Enrollment Note from Admissions
We have received many questions regarding when re-enrollment will begin and what the process is. I love that our parents are so on top of things! Re-enrollment will officially begin January 17th (January 16th is a Holiday) and continue to the 27th. In your yellow envelope on the 17th each family will receive tuition information and instructions on how to re-enroll your student(s) for Fall 2017. We are implementing a new enrollment system through K-12 Online so the process will be slightly different and completed all online, including payment of registration fees.
You will notice that there are some forms that you have not needed to fill out before. We ask that you fill out every form so that we can update and maintain an accurate student information database. This re-enrollment process should take you approximately 15 minutes. And if you should have any questions about this process, I will be here to help you through it. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as launch this new system.
Science on Wheels sponsored by PTH
Our Science on Wheels program that came to our school last Friday is just one of the awesome programs that are possible because of you! Funds raised through our Parents and Teachers of Hope are used to bring this interactive Science program to Hope School. Students from preschool through grade 8 attended an assembly, had a class lesson and/or explored the hands on Blood & Guts exhibits! Thank you PTH.
