The Value in Mistakes by Mary Norton, 3rd grade teacher
I want students to make mistakes. Learners need to not know all the answers. Learners need to feel inexperienced, puzzled, and frustrated. However, the consequences have a cost. Grades are lowered. Assignments have to be redone. Stories need to be rewritten. Tears may be shed.
Many educational systems believe that mistakes mark poor performance or inadequate teaching. Mistakes are evaluated as failures. What if we stored all our mistakes in a box in the closet? Mine would likely fill a storage container, no, a storage facility.
So, what do we do with ourselves and students who make mistakes? Let’s change our belief about a mistake. A mistake can be a learning opportunity. It can be a signpost for the risk taker, the creative thinker and a learner.
Students need a place, a classroom, in which it is safe to make the mistake, try a new idea, and take a risk. I had a student today say he was afraid to make a mistake because he would let himself down. He wants everything to be perfect. He was afraid to try a new technique. So I shared my fear of making mistakes and not knowing everything. We laughed because I occasionally get caught in my mistakes in the classroom. A connection is forged when we can all laugh and learn. Mistakes can be shared and learning can increase. Students can make a mistake to improve, learn, and build resiliency.
Philippians 3:13 Brothers and sisters, I know that I still have a long way to go. But there is one thing I do: I forget what is in the past and try as hard as I can to reach the goal before me.

PTH Board 2017-2018
There are over 3 months left of school, but it is never too soon to start planning for volunteering during next school year. Parents and Teachers of Hope (PTH) are looking to fill two board positions for next school year:
- Secretary – Responsibilities include attending at least 80% of meetings and participating in discussions and decision making; record and timely distribute minutes of board meetings and general meetings; maintain a file of all approved minutes, agendas, and materials, distributed at any PTH meeting; send correspondence, as needed, on behalf of the PTH; assist with PTH events as needed.
- Treasurer – Responsibilities include attending at least 80% of meetings and participating in discussions and decision making; know how to use Excel and QuickBooks or be willing to learn; post all financial transactions to our financial system as they occur throughout the month; draft monthly reports; reconcile the checkbook; write checks as needed (two signatures and proper paperwork required); assist with PTH events as needed. Most of the work can be done on your own schedule – after the kids are in bed, during the day, after work, whatever suits you.
For your successful service in an officer position, you will earn 100% of your PIP requirement for the school year. If you are interested or have questions, please contact PTH President Sonjia Barker at sonjiabarker@hotmail.com
