March Madness by Lisa Meyer, Middle School Teacher
This is one of our family’s favorite times of year, “March Madness.” A common saying in our household is “ball is life”, meaning we love to play and watch basketball; having this as an option during the NCAA tournament couldn’t be better! Watching the NCAA tournament is fun and entertaining and fills our competitive nature as we cheer on our teams.
The other reason that I love this time of year is because of 5th and 6th grade basketball. Having the opportunity to coach the girl’s team at Hope this year has been rewarding and fun. This is a short season and really amplifies the meaning to “March Madness”. The season is about 5 weeks long, has a handful of practices and games, but most importantly allows these students the opportunity to try something new or play a game that they have already learned skills in.
As a teacher there is nothing more rewarding than watching a student learn and apply a concept. During this short basketball season, there is a quick learning curve. The players have an opportunity to quickly learn and apply skills, come together as a team, and build confidence in a concept that could be new. This year’s team has done exactly that. There are players who have experience and those who don’t. Watching them encourage each other, develop and build skills, and have fun together is what it is all about. As crazy as this time of year can seem, I challenge you to take time during this “March Madness” season to shine, cheer and encourage one another.
