Fourth Grade Hits the Road! By Lucy Kuhn, 4th grade teacher
After a long Seattle winter, fourth grade kicked off our return from Spring Break with the first of several field trips that we will experience together in 2017. We boarded Hope’s awesome short bus and several private vehicles to tour the Seattle Aquarium for the day and to participate in a class on plankton. Students gathered water samples by throwing special nets into the Puget Sound from a high pier and scooping up the slightly green water in special containers. We observed plankton using microscopes, and learned that some types of plankton grow into familiar marine creatures such as barnacles, clams, sea stars, and crabs to name a few. Students were surprised at the shapes and sizes of the plankton and that the seemingly clear water samples held numerous forms of life in just a few drops like an underwater world. For an hour, students acted as active scientists to learn more about our local Puget Sound waters and the life it holds which is not easily observed by the unassisted eye.
After this excellent class, fourth grade spent time eating lunch together in an underwater dome room surrounded by a wide variety of Puget Sound fish and then toured many colorful exhibits including the tidal pool touch tank. Students described what the various animals felt like, looked like, and tried to pronounce scientific names. We enjoyed watching the playful antics of the sea otters and the northern fur seals and were grateful for a sun break to watch some of these animals basking in the sun on rocks and sometimes fighting over a certain desirable spot. I frequently heard, “Ms. Kuhn, look!” from excited students.
A lot of learning takes place in the classroom, but when students leave their school as a group to explore the world around them a different level of learning occurs. Students learn how to navigate crowds, listen to volunteers for directions, take in information by reading signs and asking questions, and how to keep themselves safe in a less structured setting than the classroom. Students also practice interacting in positive ways with their classmates and develop an awareness of how to present themselves in socially acceptable ways to strangers. These are skills that need to be practiced outside of school to build well rounded individuals who are able to function successfully outside of the confines of the family or classroom structure. Field trips are not just for fun!
As we move through the last trimester of the school year, bodies and brain have matured in fourth grade. It feels good to stretch and move beyond Hope together as a class to explore places and have adventures that will become strong memories of what we “did” in fourth grade, and there will be many!

Alternative Fundraiser Continues – April 18-26
You may have noticed that Parents and Teachers of Hope (PTH) has only had one fundraiser this school year where we asked families to “SELL STUFF” (Chinook Books). To help us continue to minimize the “SELLING of STUFF,” we are asking families instead to make a love offering through our alternative fundraiser. If each student’s family donates just $50, PTH will be able to continue to support our students and teachers, as well as offer low cost events without having to sell more “STUFF.” The classroom that raises the most (average per student) will win a fun prize. Look for the Alternative Fundraiser form here and send in today!

Most of these duties can be done from the comfort of your home. We also need volunteers to assist with projects, procurement, childcare, check-out, advertising, and many more opportunities for general volunteers. Why not grab a friend and do it together?
