Partners in the Community by Kristen Okabayashi
Sometimes when you follow the news it seems that our world is becoming more and more divisive but I wonder if that’s actually true. I was praying about this after the events in Las Vegas recently, and I was thinking of all the amazing people and organizations that support our school. First and foremost, we have to thank Hope Church for supporting us in so many ways – financially, in prayer, and in smaller ways such as all the volunteers who maintain our beautiful yard and fix broken things in the school. The Church planted us way back in 1959 and have loved on us ever since!
We also have many partners in the larger community around us. We have West Seattle Christian to thank for leasing us their beautiful gym every single day for PE and athletics, and we have Seattle Lutheran High School for also letting us use their gym willingly for athletic competitions, sending us high school students as TA’s, and partnering with us in educating young minds. SLHS has even moved their own PE classes so we can use their gym at times!
We also are thankful for the many restaurants and businesses in our local community:
- Dominos and Baja Taco for giving us hot lunches on Mondays and Fridays at a discounted price
- Great Harvest Bread, Bakery Nouveau, and Dream Dinners for hosting our “Real World” elective group of students over the past year
- Mioposto, Coastline, and Talaricos for donating a percentage of proceeds for dining events to our East Coast trip enrichment program
- The Catholic school system for inviting our older students to dances
Just as it “takes a village” to raise a child, it takes an even bigger village to support a school! And we are grateful for these many partners around us.

School & PTH Handbooks Coming Home Today
Every family will be receiving our Parents & Teachers of Hope handbook today. This handbook gives families information on what PTH does and how YOU can be involved in your child’s education. You can also find information on our Parent Involvement Program, where to volunteer and how to submit your hours.
School handbook will be printed and distributed to new families only. Returning families can review our handbook online here. Please note two changes: uniform bottoms regarding knit fabric being allowed, pg. 31 and replacing our Olweus Bullying program with Second Step, page 42.
School Directory – Deadline to Update Friday Oct. 20
Each year the school prints and distributes a school directory for our school families. Every effort is made to publish a complete and accurate directory. If you have had a change of address, phone or email since completing your registration form for 2017-18, go to K12Online to update. Directories will be complied next week with our goal to have them available by October 31.
Parent/Teacher Conferences Forms
Sign up forms are coming home today for our fall K-8 grade parent/teacher conferences. Please complete and return to school by Tuesday, Oct. 24th. We are adding an additional day for our middle school families to give each family sufficient time to meet with teachers.

LEST Drama Begins Oct. 25 – Grades 5-8
We will start LEST drama on Oct. 25 for the 2017/2018 school year. Our rehearsals will be on Wednesdays from 3-5PM. The Oct. 25 rehearsal will begin in Mrs. Norton’s classroom (3rd grade). Each student will receive a schedule of rehearsals and our meeting place will normally be in the commons. I encourage kids to bring a snack to eat before we act. What is LEST? LEST stands for Lutheran Elementary School Tournament. It is a tournament that involves over 1,000 Lutheran students from Washington, Oregon, and California. It takes place in Portland, Oregon at the Concordia University February 15-17, 2018. There are all kinds of competitions and our drama team is one of many. You must be committed to attend every rehearsal and go to Portland for the drama competition. The drama team is open to grades 5-8.
