Thankful Living by Patra Mueller, Family Life Minister
“Thankful Living” was the theme of our chapel last week led by Mrs. Hartley and her sweet first grade students. It brings me so much joy to watch the children lead worship. Their message reminded me that Thanksgiving isn’t one day to be thankful, but challenged me to “Thankful Living” each day. Something changes in us when we are overflowing with gratitude. As we prepare for Christmas, instead of getting caught up in the stress of preparations, consider choosing “Thankful Living.”
Perhaps “Thankful Living” looks like slowing down to spend time with our children by reading a book or playing a game together and pausing to enjoy the moment. Or maybe it is reminding our children of the abundance we have been given and consider giving a gift to someone in need. At Hope many of you support our Giving Tree outreach where we buy gifts for children in our public schools in West Seattle. If you did not pick up a tag and would still like to help, you can drop off new, unwrapped board games in the Fellowship Hall (Santa’s Workshop) or school office this week.
As we attempt to enjoy the next three weeks leading up to Christmas, “Thankful Living” might look like participating in special family traditions such as lighting an Advent wreath or opening an Advent calendar each day to find a specific Bible verse to read together as a family. Singing Christmas carols after dinner each night as a candle is lit is also another way to focus on the birth of Jesus and all the blessings in our lives. Advent devotion books are available in the Commons. A special Advent chain activity and devotion book will be sent home with our preschool families as well. You are also invited to experience the joy of Christ’s birth and worship with us on Sunday mornings at all the special upcoming concerts and programs.
