Why I Teach Middle School by Lisa Meyer, Middle school teacher
When I tell people that I teach Middle School, people often respond with WHY? This question often baffles me as I can’t imagine a better age to teach, especially Hope’s middle school students. The students we have at Hope are fun, inquisitive, kind and helpful. Yes, they can have what I call their “non-frontal lobe moments”, but I see these moments as an amazing opportunity to help them become better students and overall people.
A perfect example of the joy of working with middle school students happened this past week on the 8th graders annual trip to tour our state capital in Olympia. This is an all-day field trip where we learn the history of our capital, learn how bills are passed and even get to participate in a mock trial at the state Supreme Court level. Hope students represented themselves and our school well. They asked high level questions, showed respect to the public and made it fun to participate in our tour.
The middle school students also had an opportunity to show leadership with our younger students by sharing their children literature stories that they wrote and illustrated. Nothing warms my heart more than seeing such a diverse age work together and to shine while doing so. If you see our students in the hallway or on the playground with our younger students, you will find many opportunities to see their kind and helpful hearts.
The questions that this group of students asks are life questions: questions of why, how and who. They are able to take their inquiring minds and for the most part implement it into their daily decisions, social situations and Christian attributes. The answer to “WHY I teach Middle School” is simple, “because I absolutely LOVE them!”
