100 Days Smarter by Jennifer Neafcy, Kindergarten Teacher
Recently, the Kindergarten class celebrated the 100th day of school. Beginning on the first day of school in September, we have been counting each school day in anticipation of the 100th day of school. Once it finally arrived, we had to celebrate this milestone. The children each brought in a collection of 100 items. We created sorting mats to count and sort the items. Other activities included building a tower with 100 cups, collectively writing 100 words, drawing self-portraits of what we would all look like at 100 years old, and writing about what we will be doing when we are 100 years old. It was an exciting day for the class.
As an educator, one of my greatest joys is watching the children grow and develop, not only in their academic skills, but in their independence as well. These past 100 days have been filled with learning and growth. Kindergartners are strengthening their reading and math skills each day. If you ask any of the students what is their favorite part of the day (aside from lunch and recess) they would probably say centers. This is where we do the bulk of our reading instruction and practice. During this time, the children are able to work on their writing, build words, listen to reading, and read to either themselves or to others. We also spend time working on different strategies to tackle unfamiliar words. Currently, we use picture cues, phonics cues, sight words, context clues and prior knowledge. How great it is to watch the excitement on their faces as they use a combination of these strategies to read books. I think they even surprise themselves on how much they can actually read.
We have had a great first 100 days of school, and are looking forward to what is in store for the remainder of the school year.
