Happy 100th Birthday Hope Church! By Kristen Okabayashi
This past Sunday, Hope Church celebrated a big birthday, an astounding 100 years of ministry here in West Seattle! Hope Church was originally planted back in 1918 by a Lutheran church on Capitol Hill, who purchased 4 plots of land here on the corner of Oregon and 42nd. The first church building was eventually rebuilt in 1952 with the current church structure, and shortly after that in 1959, Hope School was established. One of the speakers at the lunch ceremony Sunday is a current Lutheran pastor, son of one of the former Hope pastors, and he was in the first graduating class at Hope School in 1963!
As I was reflecting on the celebration which featured several pastors’ sharing their thoughts and experiences, I saw a theme which I believe is true of both the church and the school. I kept hearing about Hope congregation’s determination to succeed even during tough times like the Great Depression, and the congregation’s commitment to being a light in the community around us. From holding services for German prisoners during World War II to sending missionaries to other countries consistently to currently having an enormous group of families we serve through our Human Care Ministry, our church and school have consistently tried to shine God’s love to those around us.
Not many organizations have the chance to celebrate 100 years of operations; we are blessed. Thank you to our founding fathers 100 years ago!

We will start LEST drama on Oct. 24 for the 2018/2019 school year. Our rehearsals will be every Wednesday from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. The Oct. 24 kick off will begin in Mrs. Norton’s classroom (3rd grade). Each student will receive a schedule of practices and our meeting place will normally be in the commons. I encourage kids to bring a snack to eat before we act. What is LEST? LEST stands for Lutheran Elementary School Tournament. It is a tournament that involves over 1,000 Lutheran students from Washington, Oregon, and California. It takes place in Portland, Oregon at the Concordia University on February 14-16, 2019. There are all kinds of competitions and our drama team is one of many.
