Emergency Preparedness by Kristen Okabayashi
One of the most emotionally challenging parts of my job is emergency planning for the school. I feel that in order to really prepare for emergencies, I have to put myself in the mindset of actually picturing different types of emergencies that could occur here at Hope. While it is emotionally draining, it also helps me think of ways we can always improve our emergency planning.
Based on the recommendations from OSPI, Hope School practices different types of drills, typically one per month: fire, earthquake, earthquake and evacuation, shelter in place, full lockdown, and modified lockdown drills. At this point in the school year, we have practiced a fire drill and an earthquake/evacuation drill. Each staff person in the school (and church) has a list of these drill procedures so in the unlikely event of an actual emergency, staff and students will know what to do. During this week’s evacuation drill, we simulated situations where students were injured as we set up a first aid station, search and rescue, and a communications center.
Each classroom has a red emergency backpack filled with first aid supplies and other emergency items to be used for drill and any actual emergencies if needed. Emergency food bars and water are available in containers near the school lobby. We also have individual kits of items such as survival blankets and waterproof ponchos.
If needed, the school’s first evacuation point is our lowers playground; other potential evacuation sites could include the Eagles parking lot to the west, the Seattle Lutheran High School gym to the north, and if we needed to leave the area completely, we could go to the West Seattle Stadium or Hiawatha Park. We have not practiced leaving Hope campus for a drill and would let parents know if we did leave campus. In the case of an actual emergency, we would do our best to share evacuation information with parents. I hope and pray that we never have to actually use what we have practiced, but being prepared sets my mind at ease, and hopefully your minds as well.
