East Coast Trip 2019 by Kristen Okabayashi
The Capitol, the White House, Lincoln Memorial, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and the show “Aladdin” on Broadway in NYC were all places we visited on our East Coast Trip May 10-17 with the 7th and 8th grade classes. The trip was just incredible, full of historical learning opportunities and wonderful events.
The trip is very fast-paced, designed for middle-schoolers, not us middle-aged teachers and parents who tagged along! But despite that, we all kept up well and enjoyed the overview of Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. With 56 people on the trip, probably each one of us could describe different favorite memories of the events and activities. A favorite of many of us, which is difficult to describe well, was a family style dinner in Little Italy at a restaurant called “Puglia”, pronounced “Poo-lee-uh”. The dinner in itself was delicious, but what was more fun was the entertaining musical duo who sang to us and somehow got us all standing on our chairs waving napkins around and dancing. I particularly enjoyed the nighttime visits to the Washington DC Memorials and the visit to Arlington National Cemetery, which are all so moving.
On this trip, I also particularly noticed how the students seemed to mature before our eyes, over the course of eight days. At the beginning of the trip, it seemed that we had a lot of “lost” items such as name tags, wallets, etc. The students had a difficult time keeping track of all their belongings, and it seemed that they were having difficulty adjusting to the schedule of the trip. For example, on our second night, we walked through the pouring rain to our restaurant for dinner, for what felt like miles and miles. Many of us including me felt a little grouchy and annoyed. By the end of the trip, I think we would have all handled these difficulties much better as we became very resilient and able to “go with the flow”! Key phrases we learned were “stay on the right”, “two by two”, “MY ladies and gentlemen”, and who can forget the George Washington Bridge song! It was a lively and memorable trip with a great group of students and parents.
