Pastor Bob by Lisa Meyer, Middle School Teacher
I’ll never forget the first time I met my future father-in-law, Bob Meyer. “Pastor Bob” was very intimidating to me, not just because he was the father of my boyfriend, but he just happened to be a pastor too. We met at a family dinner and it went as one would expect it to go; the “girlfriend” was over, there were lots of questions for the purpose of getting to know this person that their son was spending time with. After the evening was over, I walked away full of food, warmth and advice that I will never forget from Pastor Bob, “Life is all about how you respond to the circumstances that are beyond your control.”
I have thought about this statement throughout several situations, the most current of course being this shift of teaching and learning that we are in. “How can I respond?” I can honestly say that the students have taught me so much about how to positively respond in these last few months, and I am forever grateful. Students have had positive attitudes, are learning how to communicate and advocate for themselves, and showing kindness with each other.
Taking the lesson of positive response from the students, I am choosing to look at how I can incorporate this into my own family. Instead of focusing on all the missed activities that a busy spring brings, I am focusing on the peace we have had. There are no baseball games to attend, no school activities, college children are home allowing for time for family time, dinners together at the table, game nights, lots of puzzles, bonfires, yard word and lots of reading!
Thank you to my father in law and the advice from many years ago. Thank you, students, for being leaders who have shown me to be positive and learn from these circumstances! Thank you for a time to reflect, connect, learn, advocate, and get out of my comfortable box. I choose to respond with a positive attitude, a “cup half full” perspective, and with a deep faith in a God who uses all circumstances for good.

Hope School Summer Camp
This year’s summer camp will have a variety of fun themes and will begin the week of June 22. We will be open Monday through Friday for students who have completed one year of preschool through age 12. Preschool/extended care director Christina Figgins will run our summer camp program with our regular wonderful extended care staff. Summer camp registration is now open. You may access registration by clicking on the following link: https://campsself.active.com/hopelutheranschool
More safety procedures are currently being finalized and we will share these with each family closer to the opening date of June 22, assuming that we are able to open as scheduled. At this time, we feel reasonably confident that we will be able to host a summer camp program, although certainly we may find out we have to cancel if leaders share that it’s not safe to operate. If we do have to cancel summer camp, we will offer a full tuition refund minus a $20 per week processing fee.
If you have questions about the details of signing up, you may contact Sally Heit at sheit@hopeseattle.org. If you have questions about camp or safety protocols, you can reach out the summer camp director Christina Figgins at cfiggins@hopeseattle.org or Principal Kristen Okabayashi at kokabayashi@hopeseattle.org.
