Life Lessons I Have Learned From Being a Musician by Thaddus Franklin, Music Director
Music doesn’t just teach you how to play an instrument. It teaches you how to have a better mindset towards life while cultivating skills that can allow you to become more resilient. Here are 10 lessons I have learned from music that can also be analogies for life.
- Accomplishing any goal is simple, as long as you have enough time.
- The fastest way to learn anything is by learning it slowly.
- Practicing requires more than patience, it requires being ok with yourself.
- Listen to others. Sometimes you play the melody, other times you support the melody, and yet other times your job is to remain silent until your voice is needed.
- Sometimes you will get lost. Embrace the uncertainty and listen to where you are so you can figure out what comes next.
- Focusing on a problem with your technique often makes the problem seem bigger and more difficult. Focusing on the technique you want usually helps you realize how to solve the problem (and that oftentimes there was never a problem to begin with).
- Learning requires imitation but at some point you will have to trust your own voice. As Miles Davis said, “it takes a long time to sound like yourself.”
- The beginning and ending of a song are the most important parts because the beginning sets up expectations and the ending is the last thing people hear.
- ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” is terrible advice for music. Musicians will practice the same difficult passage over and over again and expect different results every day. It’s literally how we learn.
- Mistakes are not only ok, they are expected and accepted. Mistakes can lead to new ideas that are more interesting than what was originally intended. A perfect example of this is the drum sound created by Phil Collins in 1979. He mistakenly added a gated reverb effect to his drums that went on to become the defining sound of music in the 80s. https://youtu.be/Bxz6jShW-3E

Virtual Lest 2021
What is LEST? It stands for the Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament and it was hosted every February by Concordia University in Portland. The first LEST was held in 1962 with four Portland area schools participating in a boys basketball tournament. As word of the tournament spread, schools from Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington began traveling by train, plane, or bus to participate in LEST. Over the years, additional activities and competitions were added, with recent years including over 1,000 students, 20 events, and as many as 21 schools from various states. Due to the closure of Concordia University last spring,
LEST 2020 was the final year in Portland.
What is a virtual LEST? With the closure of Concordia and the pandemic, LEST 2021 almost did not happen; fortunately, a small dedicated group (including our own Mr. Allen and Mrs. Okabayashi) worked hard to put into place limited competitions that can be done virtually. Just last week, information on the events was released to schools. LEST 2021 will occur on April 29-30, 2021 during the school day and we are currently creating space for students to compete in these events
Shoe Drive – Sat. 3/20 from 9AM to 1:00PM
Families of Hope, My name is Grace, I am an 8th grader at Hope School. For my confirmation project I am doing a sneaker drive. I have connected with a company called Got Sneakers who collects new or gently used sneakers to donate to folks who are in need or recycle them to keep the shoes out of landfills. I will be collecting shoes on March 20, in the Hope Lowers between 9am-1pm and a flyer is coming home today which contains extra instructions for donating shoes.
Thank you in advance for your support, Grace.
