Student Teaching by Kristen Okabayashi

This year, we’ve been pleased to welcome Anna Zetzsche as a student teacher in first grade, under the mentorship of Erika Alba. Miss Zetzsche is a senior at Seattle Pacific University, and will graduate this June with her degree in elementary education.

What is a student teacher, you might ask? Student teachers work under the supervision of a licensed classroom teacher such as Mrs. Alba to gain skills and experience. Miss Zetzsche started out by observing Mrs. Alba this fall prior to moving into a more interactive teaching role this winter and spring. By now, she is co-teaching most days with Mrs. Alba, and they have developed a strong working relationship together.

In my opinion, the most difficult part of teaching for a student teacher or a new teacher is classroom management. In order to be certified, all teachers have to demonstrate mastery of their subject area with a written test, so content knowledge is not typically the difficult part. Managing a classroom of squirrely students is the hard part! Anna was a preschool teacher prior to coming to Hope, and so this part has actually been relatively easy for her since she’s already had years of experience with managing a class.

Anna has been a joy for us to have at Hope! She has fit in well with our staff, and has brought creativity and fun to our first grade class. She’s someone who is naturally suited to teaching, and we know she will be a blessing to any school. If you see her out front, be sure to say hi.

Closures during Spring Break

Please note that our Extended School Care and Sand Dollar club programs will be closed during our spring break, April 5-9, 2021. Our school office will be closed during this week as well. We pray this is a time of rest and renewal for our staff and families!

Spring Break Travel Update

As shared yesterday, based on continued directives from the Department of Health regarding quarantine after travel and on current recommendations from the CDC, Hope families who travel out of state during spring have the following options:

  • Upon return home, quarantine for 14 days
  • Upon return home, quarantine and take a COVID-19 test between days 3-5; if test is negative and there are no COVID symptoms, quarantine will end after 7 days
  • Vaccinated individuals do not need to quarantine

Spring 2021 Track Season

With COVID rates decreasing, at this time our athletic department is hoping to offer a track season to students in grades 5-8. Head coach Mr. Goodspeed has mentioned this to students already and sent out preliminary information. 5th and 6th grades will practice on Tuesdays and 7th and 8th grades will practice on Thursdays after school from April 13-May 20, 2021. Track is considered a low risk sport and masks will be worn. Athletes will have times and distances recorded at practice and then compete virtually with athletes at other schools in our athletic league. If you have questions or your child is interested and has not signed up yet, please reach out to Mr. Goodspeed as soon as possible at mgoodspeed@hopeseattle.org. Coach Goodspeed is also looking for assistant coaches and parent volunteers to help transport backpacks to the fields for practices and to help on virtual meet days.

Trimester 2 Report Cards

Report cards will be sent home on Tuesday, March 30. Please sign the envelope to acknowledge receipt of report card and return to your students’ homeroom teacher. Hybrid Th/F groups and virtual student’s report cards will be mailed. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions.

Parent Teacher Conferences – April 15 & 16, 2021

Preschool student spring conferences are required and K-8 student spring conferences are optional. Conferences provide an opportunity to discuss how each child is performing, primarily cognitively but also socially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Teachers will review MAP test results and parents/guardians will have the opportunity to ask questions.

This year, most conferences will be held with the homeroom teacher only, including middle school. Please click on the link below to sign up for a conference on April 15 or 16, 2021, with your student’s teacher. All conferences will be held via the homeroom teacher’s Zoom and will be 20 minutes in length.

Please let us know in the office if you have any questions about parent/teacher conferences; we look forward to meeting with all of you!
