Technology in 2021 by Roger Davenport, Technology Director
Thankfully, this year has been a bit easier on all of us technologically. We have had the students back in school full time and no zoom – yay! But we have still had a new learning curve, with a new Student Information System (Gradelink) and a new learning management system (Google Classroom).
If you have not already done so, I urge you to sign in to Gradelink. As a school we are going to be using the teacher pages and the School Communication Pages more going forward. I would not want anyone to miss out on any information. If you did not get login credentials on the Back to School night, please reach out to either your child’s classroom teacher or myself.
The middle schoolers have done a fantastic job of transitioning to Google Classroom for assignments and coursework. They seem to love the convenience of submitting assignments right from the same place that they completed the documents. I highly encourage you to look at your child’s iPad and get them to explain how Google Classroom works. Middle school parents will be able to see grades and outstanding assignments in Gradelink. If you are unsure how to do this please look at my page on the school website for some handy links.
If you have any questions relating to technology at Hope or how students should be using it, please feel free to reach out to me rdavenport@hopeseattle.org.
MAP Testing in October
During the month of October, your child will take a MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA® on their Hope iPads. We give students MAP Growth tests to determine their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in math, reading and language (language in grades 3-8 only). Your child’s teacher will communicate more with you about their class’ testing schedule.
MAP Growth tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of learning. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This results in a detailed picture of what your child knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below their grade level. Since MAP Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child’s learning, it’s easy for teachers to identify students with similar scores that are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics, and then plan instruction accordingly.
We are truly excited to focus on your child’s individual growth and achievement. For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: NWEA.org/Parent-Toolkit. If you have any questions, please let us know.

PIP Opportunities
We continue to need assistance with lunch and recess coverages. Please contact Mrs. Neafcy at jneafcy@hopeseattle.org if you can help out and are vaccinated. Currently we need help on Mondays from 11:35 am to 12:45 pm and Tuesday – Fridays from 12:00 to 12:45 pm.
Log Your PIP Hours
We are using our new SIS Gradelink to track volunteer hours. To log your hours, please log into your Gradelink account with your credentials and click on the Service Hours tab. Enter the activity and the time spent volunteering. Hours will be submitted to and approved by the front office. PIP or Parent Involvement Program hours are for families with students in grades K-8 and information can be found in our handbook here.
COVID-19 Vaccination Status
If your child has been vaccinated for COVID-19, please send a screen shot or picture of their vaccination card to the Hope school office at office@hopeseattle.org. This will be important for contract tracing purposes as vaccinated individuals without symptoms do not need to quarantine after COVID-19 exposure, according to guidance from the Department of Health. We have received many of these already so thank you!
