Building Community Together by Sally Heit
I have been working at Hope for 10 years as admissions director, but before that I was a parent, just like you, with a young daughter (Emily) who was ready for preschool. Being a young mom I had no idea how to navigate finding a school, and so I followed the lead of more experienced moms and began looking at schools. My search brought me to Hope preschool. I had always attended public school; my husband attended private school. Eric and I agreed that combining our church experience with our school experience would fit our family best; a faith-based community that did life together.
Flash forward and I’m a mom of a sophomore at Western WA University, a senior at West Seattle High School and an eighth grader here at Hope. All of my kids will have graduated from Hope School by this June. This community has seen our family through some tough times; we’ve made life-long friends with other parents; our kids have been baptized and celebrated their confirmations here; and the church and school staff have supported and lifted me up more times than I can count in my work at the school. I can’t imagine going through the pandemic without this community of parents, teachers, staff and parishioners.
As we begin this year coming out of the pandemic, the start of this year has been one of the most hopeful. It’s an exciting time of reconnecting with each other more freely, getting back into routines, and embracing the luxury of planning ahead for the year. Greeting our students in the morning, seeing their smiles, offering lunch in the Fellowship Hall, bringing back clubs and sports and seeing our sixth graders off tomorrow to Outdoor Ed fills me with joy and makes me appreciate all the more the community that is Hope School.
