Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST) Coming Up! by Kristen Okabayashi
What is LEST and why are we excited about it? The first LEST occurred in 1962 on the campus of Concordia University Portland, with 4 Portland schools competing in a basketball tournament. Over time, schools from outside the Portland area began traveling to LEST and additional events were added, culminating in the current structure with multiple team events including academics, fine arts and performing arts, and athletics and 21 different Lutheran schools.
With the closure of Concordia University Portland in 2020 and then the pandemic, LEST 2021 was a virtual event. Last year, a smaller in-person LEST happened in Tacoma, WA as a rebirth of the annual tradition, now known as LEST Northwest.
LEST is a highlight of the school year for students, families and staff. Open to students in grades 5-8, this year’s LEST is coming up February 16-18, 2023. Many of the students at Hope are competing in at least one event this year, and anyone is welcome to watch this year.
A preliminary schedule for Hope events is going home today in the Tuesday envelopes. Families may find more information by checking the LEST main website at https://lestnorthwest.org/ or the Hope LEST webpage @ https://hls.hopeseattle.org/news/lest/.
Go Hope Eagles!
