Autumn Athletics by Mark Goodspeed, PE Teacher & Athletic Director
As the days grow shorter, and the tree leaves start to change color and then drop, the crispiness and bite of the winter air hits a little more often, and the rain falls almost every day. We look forward to being inside and hearing the sound of a basketball being dribbled on the floor and hearing the cheering for our teams as all sounds of Winter sports here at Hope. However, we cannot forget that it also marks the end of our Fall sports season. We had two teams competing this Fall season, Girls Volleyball and Co-Ed Cross country. Both teams made enormous strides throughout their season, working hard and improving over the course of their respective seasons.
Cross Country: Led by new coach Manuel Alba, the team was a group of mostly younger first-time runners this season. Eager to improve themselves, they often ran hard during their practices so that they could improve their placement in our league meets during the season. At our League Championship meet last week, the team placed 4th. The team was consistently paced by runners Henry (6th), Siena (5th), Bryson (8th), Edison (5th), and Eli (5th) during the season. I am excited to see this team grow together in the coming years and place even higher! Special congratulations to Siena for placing 4th for girls at the League Championship meet.
Volleyball: Led by veteran coaches Jen Rice and Sally Heit and newcomer Jessica Esses, the school saw a record number of girls turn out for the team this season, 21 in all! Split almost even down the middle between 7/8th grade and 5/6th grade, we were able to have 2 complete teams during the season.
First the 7/8th grade was a veteran group this year with many of the girls having played for the school for the past 3-4 years. Their experience showed as the team took 2nd in the Peace Lutheran Invitational and have done very well in their games throughout the season as they came together to be a true team, learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses and supporting each other during the course of the season. Led by 8th graders Eve and Kayla, along with 7th graders Issabella and newcomer Remy, the team placed 4th in the League’s Championship Tournament.
The 5/6th grade team was a mix of new players (some never having played volleyball ever) and returning players. It was a growing year for this young team. They competed hard and learned a lot of the essential building blocks of how to play volleyball during the season which will lay the groundwork for them to continue to grow even further next season!
Congratulations Eagles on a great season! As their athletic director, I am super proud of all our athletes this season who represented Hope Lutheran so well! I look forward to it continuing into the upcoming season of Basketball which will start up in mid November. Go Eagles!
