LEST 2020 Final Thoughts by Kristen Okabayashi, Hope Principal
The news of Concordia University-Portland closing at the end of the school year added to the emotions we always feel during LEST. The joy of competing and doing your best, the sadness when an event doesn’t go quite as you planned, and the laughter and connection of being together added to the subtle grief of realizing this was the last year at Concordia.
Our Hope students had an exceptional year in the academic categories. The awards sheet goes home today in the Tuesday envelopes, so you can see how we performed. Our students did extremely well in math and all of our spellers placed in the top 3 in the spelling bee. One student placed in chess and another was awarded “most promising writer” so kudos to our smart students and our rigorous teachers!
Another highlight for me this year was seeing our overall school spirit shine so brightly. If you have been to LEST before, you know Friday is an exhausting day full of event after event. This year, we had a 7:30 AM boys basketball game the very next day on Saturday, which was so difficult to get excited about! And yet, most of our families and our entire cheer squad showed up and cheered loudly and proudly throughout the entire game. It was something I will remember always! Our students and parents are so supportive of each other and I know the players felt the enthusiasm.
Going forward, I am on the leadership committee to ensure that the LEST tradition continues. It will be in a different location and I’m sure there will be changes made, but we have a team of people who are very committed to LEST 2.0, as I like to call it. Go Eagles!
