WOH For September 11, 2018

Posted September 11, 2018 by Shari Wallace & filed under School Newsletter.

Welcome To Hope! By Sally Heit, Admission Director

While at my parent’s home in Sherwood, OR this late August, I walked outside and immediately noticed a change in how the air smelled, and it wasn’t just the lack of smoke. It was the smell of fall, which always symbolizes going back to school for me. Weren’t we just saying goodbye to each other in June? The summer went fast, but the additions of a new playground, new staff and classes, and new families created excitement and joy in my heart.

The beginning of a new school year is always thrilling, especially when you see the students back in the hallways and classrooms. While Mrs. Okabayashi, Mrs. Wallace, and I appreciate the quiet that comes with summer office hours and no band aide or ice pack applications, after a month or so it gets kind of lonely. It is great to see everyone back, and see all the students and staff walking the hallways again.

Many of you probably noticed lots of new faces at the back-to-school barbeque. We have been blessed with new students in every class! The majority of these students are coming from different schools, and it is always hard to jump into a new situation where you may not know anyone and everything is different. That can be said for students and parents. As we get into the business of sports, after school activities, and play dates, reach out to one another and say hi. Invite a new parent to coffee or arrange a play date with a new student. Invite them to a sports event. We have a whole year ahead of fun and learning planned so jump right in!

Practices are usually twice a week and games are once per week. If you are interested please email Co-Athletic Directors, Tim Allen at tallen@hopeseattle.org and Mark Goodspeed at mgoodspeed@hopeseattle.org for practice and game details.

Lunches and Recesses

Hope Lutheran utilizes the services of a third party hot lunch provider. If desired, families may order lunches online to be delivered at school. Students may also bring their own lunch to school each day. Parents bringing lunches to school are requested to drop them off in the school office with the child’s name clearly indicated. Students will be allowed to pick up their lunch at the beginning of their lunch hour. Milk is available and must be purchased in advance on an annual basis. Please do not send nuts, peanuts or seeds in lunches due to allergies.

All students typically have daily recesses outside. If the weather is extremely cold or rainy, indoor activities will be planned.

Parent Involvement Program or PIP Opportunities

Lunch and Recess Volunteers

Volunteers still needed to assist Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday’s in our lunchroom from 11:40 am-12:50 pm and our lunchtime recess from 12:00-1:05pm. Volunteers will be working with a teacher or staff person and will provide our hard-working teachers with a designated lunch break each day. If you can help with any of these times, please contact Shari Wallace at swallace@hopeseattle.org or (206) 935-8500.

School Savings Day at Hope School

Every Monday in September, Mr. Savings (Hope Church member Larry Koltz) will be inside the main entry doors at 8:15 a.m. “Mr. Savings” will be offering a student savings account through LCEF (Lutheran Church Extension Fund). Students will be able to deposit money into the account through a Stamp program. Each stamp is worth $1.00. Once a student has $25 worth of stamps they can open their savings account. For three weeks (until September 24th) the first $12.50 invested will be matched with $12.50 by a member of Hope Church. The account currently pays 3.5% interest up to $1,000 until the student is 18 years old. They can also earn extra credit for good grades and service hours. For additional information contact Larry Koltz at 206.932.8036 or LLkoltz@aol.com.
