A Principal’s Joy by Kristen Okabayashi
A couple weeks have gone by with Easter and spring break, but I wanted to be sure to go back to last month’s talent show and basketball tournament. As important as academic learning is to us as a school, sometimes our extra-curricular events are so inspiring and joyful that I must share a couple stories with you all!
Our annual talent show is one of the school events that I am actively involved in, from auditioning our acts to giving suggestions along with our other “talent scouts”, to overseeing the actual show itself. This year’s talent show was the biggest we have ever had, with 24 acts and a wide variety of talent, including skits, songs, dancing, and gymnastics. I was so impressed with our kids this year in many ways. First I was impressed that we have so many brave students, most of who were very nervous beforehand, but still were able to get up and perform a talent in front of hundreds of people in the gym. We had several kindergarten students perform this year, which really takes courage at that young age! But second, I was so proud of a couple of our students who stepped in literally the day of the talent show and filled in for friends who were sick. We had a fifth grader who stepped in during lunch, an hour before the show, and filled in beautifully for another student, and we even had a preschool student sibling fill in for a kindergarten that was sick. All these kids have so much God-given talent, and I was so proud of them! Third, I was especially grateful for our older students, who really set the example in cheering for and encouraging everyone who performed. They were great role models for our school and I could not have been more proud of them.
The second story is about our annual trip to Bremerton for Peace Lutheran’s 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament. Both the girl’s team and boy’s team went over this year and competed against several other teams. Our girl’s team worked hard all season and really improved, finally winning their first game in the very last game of the year before the tournament. To our surprise, they played hard in every single game and ended up winning the tournament! I have to say I actually teared up when they won because I know it meant so much to them. Our boys also won the tournament, which we think is a first for us as a school.
We are blessed to have students who work hard in everything they do, and who encourage and support each other. It is my joy to work with them every day!
