Love One Another by Kristen Okabayashi, Hope Principal
This past weekend both Hope and Seattle Lutheran High School kicked off their basketball seasons, which makes for a fun time of year! However, at one of the high school games on Saturday, we had a strange incident happen. I was sitting with a group of other Seattle Lutheran parents when a fan of the other team sat himself down right in the middle of our group. This particular fan had clearly imbibed in what we’ll call “holiday cheer” before arriving, and he continually stood up to cheer for his team loudly, blocking the view of the group I was sitting with. A couple of us politely asked him to sit down or to move to an area where he wasn’t blocking, but he was getting annoyed with us and we were getting annoyed with him. Fans get emotional in games, and so it was not a good situation.
Fortunately, the overzealous fan left at halftime and we all relaxed to enjoy the second half. But just before the second half began, he came back and plunked himself down right in the middle of us again. I began scanning the area to look for seats to move to. But then something interesting happened. My husband Scott looked at me, smiled, and with a bit of a sigh, he sat himself right next to the other fan and started talking with him. It turned out that the fan was purposely trying to be annoying through complicated reasons of his own, partly as a result of him misunderstanding what one of our fans said. But my husband talked and talked with him, and by the end of the game both of them were cheering for each other’s teams if one of the players made a particularly strong play. The fan stopped getting up and blocking our view, and was completely pleasant to sit with.
I am fortunate to be married to someone who can almost always find common ground with anyone. God has blessed him with the ability to love others, even when they might seem unlove-able to many of us! I couldn’t believe how this particular situation turned around completely. As we continue on in the season of Advent, let’s follow Scott’s lead and even more, the directive God gave us, to love one another.
John 13:34 English Standard Version (ESV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
