WOH For Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020

Posted February 11, 2020 by Shari Wallace & filed under School Newsletter.

Lasting Impressions by Kristen Okabayashi, Hope Principal

As we prepare to send off our older students to compete in the annual Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST) in Portland this week, I recently talked with them about how others at LEST will view them. Students, parents, and staff from other schools and the Concordia University staff will all have an overall picture of Hope Lutheran School, based on the interactions they all have with our students and parents. Our students have worked hard in preparation for the event(s) they will compete in, and soon all their preparation will be put to the test. They will have to decide how they will handle their stress, their emotions, and the highs and lows of competition. How will they represent God, Hope School, their family, and themselves?

My own four boys, who are all in high school and college now, spent years competing at LEST. They found themselves in some challenging situations not always even directly related to LEST events, and had to figure out what to do. One year, the vending machine at the hotel was broken and so anyone could get free items from it. Students had to decide – should they take an item for free or not? At times, students will be outperformed or simply not be as good as another competitor – how will they handle it? Will they fall apart or will they fight their way through their emotions to perform to the best of their ability anyway? Some of our students are competing in several different events, and will be tired. How will they summon the reserves to continue to do their best?

For all of these reasons and more, LEST is a powerful learning experience for our students. What will be their lasting impression? I can’t wait to find out. Go Eagles!
