WOH For Tuesday, February 2, 2021

Posted February 2, 2021 by Shari Wallace & filed under School Newsletter.

Preschool is Thriving by Tammy Shelver, Teacher Sea Turtles

Preschool is thriving! This past month, we enrolled the Sea Turtle Class into “Space Camp.” They have journeyed to the stars, built command control centers, taken a ride in a space shuttle, played with moon sand, and have had fun leaving planet Earth for a short while. We can learn a lot from preschoolers. They can live in the moment so effortlessly. They aren’t concerned about what tomorrow will bring. They just are! To them, their preschool time is “business as usual.”

In class, the students were asked about stars. They talked about them with awe. They wondered how “the glowy lights fly wherever the stars go”, and where they went during the day. They jumped up and down and squealed in delight when our “rockets” exploded upwards towards the sky after we put alka seltzer and water in them. They thought the astronaut food (rehydrated pudding) was the yummiest treat ever! They counted planets, talked about their mysterious journeys into space, sorted “planet” rocks by their beginning sounds, and read about our solar system.

Children are such wonderful teachers! If we want to remember what life is all about, we just need to spend a little time with preschoolers. It won’t be long before we appreciate the simplicity, joy and presence that a child exudes. We may even wonder, “How can I be more like him/her?”

I am so grateful that preschool has continued in person this year. The gift that children bring us is their hearts. They invite us into their world and their joyful, creative play. A place where so much is fresh and new; where it’s fine to dance down a sidewalk; acceptable to cry a river of tears, then laugh hysterically the next moment; a place where we can pause and appreciate the beauty and mystery of life. Let us all strive to remember the lessons of our children.
