WOH For Tuesday, March 1, 2022

Lent by Jennifer Neafcy, Assistant Principal

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of the Lenten season in the church year. Not all churches observe the season of Lent, so the meaning of the season and why we observe the season isn’t always widely known. Lent is approximately 6 weeks or 40 days (not counting the Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. The Lenten season signals a time of repentance and preparing for the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. Repentance brings us the awareness that we are sinful and we live in a sinful world. It also brings to the forefront the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus, on the cross, to forgive us of our sin and to reconcile us to God. What great love shown to us by God and Jesus!

Growing up, my family observed Lent. My mother grew up Catholic, and my father grew up Lutheran. Our family followed the traditions of giving up something for Lent and not eating meat on Fridays. When we would think about what we were to give up for Lent, we were encouraged to give up something that was meaningful to us. Usually, I gave up sweets or chocolate. As I got older, I thought more about why we give things up for Lent. I must admit that many times, the things that I would give up were things that would help me focus on self-improvement. The purpose of giving something up keeps us mindful of the sacrifice that Jesus gave for us.

Recently, instead of giving up something for Lent, I have started taking on something, such as daily journaling with my devotions. These activities have had the same effect of keeping Jesus’ sacrifice in the forefront. Whether you give something up for Lent, take something on, or do neither, Lent is a time for us to keep our focus on Jesus, our faith in Him, our sin, and our need for a Savior.

You are all invited to join us tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2 at 7:00 pm for our traditional Ash Wednesday worship service led by Pastor Peter Mueller. Then, each Wednesday evening during the season of Lent, we will be watching segments from the “Chosen” series and discovering how Jesus impacted every life He touched leading up to his death and resurrection.

Blessings to all of you as we prepare our hearts this Lenten season for the celebration of the Easter resurrection of Jesus.

Save the Date! Seattle Lutheran High School Musical

This spring, Seattle Lutheran High School Drama is proud to present The World According to Snoopy.  Snoopy is the world’s most lovable dog, but people don’t feel the same about his owner, Charlie Brown.  In a series of comic strip-like scenes, we watch everyone’s favorite “Peanuts” characters go to school, sit in the pumpkin patch, ask for psychiatric advice, and have wild flights of fancy.  This funny, uplifting musical reminds us all of the power of friendship.  Don’t miss it!
