Joyful Moments in Fifth Grade!  Ms. Lucy Kuhn,  5th Grade Teacher

Fifth grade is a time of transition from the elementary homeroom to the start of middle school. Some of our students have been at Hope since preschool and others joined just this year at the age range of 9-11. Everyone in our class is valued and appreciated for all the different ways they contribute to our learning community.  For the past two years, this particular class transitioned multiple times between school, home, and online learning in some form. In-person learning has included mask-wearing and other COVID-19 protocols  since the start of grade 4. It has been both a memorable and unusually stressful two years. As spring approaches, we look forward to change and we appreciate the many joyful moments we have each day as a learning community because we are blessed to be here together working, growing, and sharing experiences as a class.

Recently, fifth grade students participated in L.E.S.T. for the first time at Hope. This year students competed in writing, music (piano), science, spelling, and swimming. All participants reported they had fun! In the fall, fifth grade students participated in some of Hope’s team sports for the first time (cross country, soccer, football), and many are currently starting the fifth/sixth grade basketball season. Students share that they are excited and joyful for the chance to join their classmates in these after school experiences, and they are looking forward to doing more this spring and in future grades.

When fifth grade students start the day they are excited to see and feed our class pet (Duma the leopard gecko), hoist the flags representing our country and faith, and spend time with their friends both in the classroom and on the playground. They share about their home lives, celebrate birthdays, and create inside jokes.  Students look forward to things like art, technology, science, P.E., and music and they work together to earn class points for community building experiences like game time.  These are all moments of joy we experience together.

As we move through the Lenten season I invite you to create and practice a habit of noticing and increasing joyful moments in your life. The Joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10.  Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  1. Write down specific moments that bring you happiness (journal)
  2. Keep mementos of happy moments and look at them when you are discouraged/sad
  3. Tell someone about positive outcomes in your life (share your successes)
  4. Pray for loved ones/friends individually and specifically
  5. Create personal ways to practice your faith in your daily life (personal devotion time or with a small group)

May Joy and Peace be with you in 2022 and always.

Save the Date! Seattle Lutheran High School Musical

This spring, Seattle Lutheran High School Drama is proud to present The World According to Snoopy.  Snoopy is the world’s most lovable dog, but people don’t feel the same about his owner, Charlie Brown.  In a series of comic strip-like scenes, we watch everyone’s favorite “Peanuts” characters go to school, sit in the pumpkin patch, ask for psychiatric advice, and have wild flights of fancy.  This funny, uplifting musical reminds us all of the power of friendship.  Don’t miss it!

In the Menashe Gymnasium at Seattle Lutheran High School

Friday, April 29th at 7:30pm

Saturday, April 30th at 7:30pm
