Prolific Advice I Received From My Teachers – By Thad Franklin, Music Director

Lately I’ve been feeling reflective as one of my favorite music teachers, Ron Miles, passed

away just a few days ago. I am incredibly lucky to have spent time with him and even luckier to

have recorded an album with him. I’ve had amazing teachers over the years and I’d like to

share some of their wisdom with you. All of their advice applies to music, but some of these

can easily be used in everyday life as well. Because it matters who they are, I’d like to give

recognition where it is due. The teachers who influenced me the most are Vern Sielert, Tim

Hagans, Tom Garling, Ron Miles, and Laurie Frink. Here are 12 things I learned from them.

  1. Listen, listen, listen. Musicians have conversations with notes rather than words. Unlike

words, notes cannot lie.

  1. Silence is just the space between notes. Don’t be afraid of it. The things you don’t say are

often as important as the things you say.

  1. There are no wrong notes if you believe in what you play.
  2. Practice slow. It’s the fastest way to learn.
  3. Anything is easy if you do it enough times.
  4. Do not fear mistakes. How else would you learn?
  5. Start and stop at the same time. We have more power when we do things together.
  6. Perception is everything. Did that song sound bad? Of course not. There are people in a

war somewhere hearing guns firing or bombs exploding. THOSE are bad sounds.

  1. The best musicians sound like themselves but they had to imitate other people to get there.

During this time, they will be in classrooms, observing drop-off and pick-up, and talking with staff, students, and parents. Please pray for the accreditation process and for our team members as they leave their schools for a few days to be with us. We will share more information about the visit later this spring.

SLHS Spring Musical April 29 30 and May 1 2022  – Purchase Tickets Here!

This spring, Seattle Lutheran High School Drama is proud to present The World According to Snoopy.  Snoopy is the world’s most lovable dog, but people don’t feel the same about his owner, Charlie Brown.  In a series of comic strip-like scenes, we watch everyone’s favorite “Peanuts” characters go to school, sit in the pumpkin patch, ask for psychiatric advice, and have wild flights of fancy.  This funny, uplifting musical reminds us all of the power of friendship.  Don’t miss it! Dates are April 29, 30 and May 1; tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and non-SLHS students.
