Finish Strong by Kristen Okabayashi
My middle son Alex is a senior at Seattle Lutheran High School this year, and he is a kid who is involved in everything. From academics to sports in every season to student council to drama, he has given high school his “all”. He recently made the decision to attend Seattle Pacific University in the fall, and discovered firsthand that giving high school his “all” has resulted in a great benefit to college scholarships as well. He is really looking forward to starting his new adventure at SPU. With that decision made, he is also finding it difficult to finish out his senior year without looking ahead too much. He has a bright future ahead of him, and yet he has to push through this last month to end his year successfully.
Like Alex, some of our 8th grade students who will graduate in a few short weeks are struggling to finish strong. In looking ahead to their new high schools, they see a bright future beckoning to them. They wonder, how hard will the classes be? What clubs or sports will they join? What will their friends be like? And yet, even as they look ahead, they need to focus on the present moment and finish the hard work they have mostly completed here at Hope.
Not to be overly philosophical, but we all could learn a lesson with this. Many of us struggle with looking ahead to the future and looking back at the past, but sometimes we just need to finish what we started in the present. Like our 8th grade students, we have to finish that project, reach out to that good friend who we haven’t seen in a while, and continue to work hard on our current state.
And if you see one of our 8th graders, encourage them to finish strong!
