It’s a Fact! By Erika Alba, Fourth Grade Teacher
During our earliest days in childhood, we begin to learn math facts using auditory learning as our parents tell us, “ Now say one, two, three,” and we repeat back, “One, two, free,” like the words to a familiar song. In preschool we begin to learn that numbers have meaning and hold value. We learn that numbers have one-to-one correspondence and that we can use them to count things, a crucial skill we often take for granted as adults. In primary grades we learn to increase, combine, add and sum numbers. We learn how to decrease, take away and subtract those same numbers. We learn the very beginnings of decomposition and mathematical thinking.
By the time students are in fourth grade, they have been exposed to The Four Operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. About halfway through the year, comes the culminating moment in the learning process of elementary mathematics. Students are faced with using all four operations to solve a single problem. It is at this moment that all the years of elementary school mathematics come together. It is at this moment that knowing the solution to 7+3 or 7 x 3 as easily as recognizing the letter ‘A’ or repeating ‘one, two, three,” is so important. When math facts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are learned and stored in long-term memory, it provides learners with less of a cognitive load in working memory when faced with a challenge such as bringing all four operations together.
Although students learn and practice skills of mathematical fluency in school, mastery of math fluency, like mastery of learning an instrument or playing a sport, requires additional practice outside of school. Students can skip count while they are taking a walk. They can use flashcards. Another great resource is IXL, an online math practice program that all Hope Lutheran students have access to.
As the days become longer, and the weather becomes warmer, be sure to include math fact practice as part of your child’s summer adventure. Knowing those math facts are important. It’s a fact.
