WOH For Tuesday, May 21, 2019

Posted May 21, 2019 by Shari Wallace & filed under School Newsletter.

Field Trip with 7th Grade by Lisa Meyer, Middle School Teacher

7th graders recently traveled to Bainbridge Island to visit the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial and Historical Museum.  It was an amazing day of learning about the Japanese Americans who were taken to Manzanar Internment camps during World War II.  Students were able to hear from docents who were only 2 and 7 years old when their family had to leave Bainbridge Island and move into the camp.  The 7th graders walked through the memorial’s 276 steps, which represent the number of people who were taken off of the island.  The message that they came back with was, “We cannot let something like this happen again! Our voices and actions can make a difference.”

This is such a strong message for this generation.  Teaching our kids to approach learning by thinking critically can help their voice be heard. Our students at Hope have opportunities to think critically so that they can stand up and be heard.  Studies show that those who think critically are effective communicators, have an appreciation of different world views, and make sounder decisions based on reason verses emotions.  This generation of students gives us hope and I’m so proud and honored to walk through this time with them.

When we were leaving the museum, our docents shared this with me: “I have hope in the future because of your kids.” I do too!
