Makerspace and Technology by Jennifer Neafcy, Assistant Principal
This past school year, I have been blessed to teach a variety of grade levels and a variety of subjects. One of the classes I taught this year was Makerspace and technology to K-2 students. The first half of the year focused on Makerspace. Makerspace, basically, means a space for making. It is a space where students can turn ideas into designs and products. Students are given a challenge or a problem to solve, and then find ways to solve the problem using a given set of resources. What I love about Makerspace is that it taps into students’ creativity and critical thinking skills to solve a problem with what is made available to them. It’s not just creating a masterpiece for the sake of creating (which is also an important skill), but it is creating with a purpose. Examples of activities included building structures with just toothpicks and marshmallows (that was trickier than we thought it would be), using craft sticks, clay, and cardstock to create a shelf to hold as many paperclips as possible, and creating animals using only pipe cleaners and pony beads.
The second half of the year, we focused on technology. More specifically, we focused on coding. Our coding adventures began with Ozobots, small robots that read color codes to move in certain ways. For instance, when an Ozobot travels over the colors green, red, green, red, the Ozobot will spin. Students created paths, with markers, for the Ozobots to travel with codes throughout the path. They were amazed at all that the Ozobots could do. After exploring coding with Ozobots, we moved on to coding apps on the iPads. We used Scratch Jr., Kodable, and Tynker. All these apps required the students to give commands to characters to complete a task. It was fun to watch the students think about the commands to give, test it out, and then make the necessary changes to complete the task.
I loved being able to spend time with our younger students and watching their creativity and critical thinking skills develop and grow.

COVID-19 Rapid Tests and Protocols
Individuals with COVID-19 symptoms are encouraged to take a PCR test, as the PCR test will detect the virus before rapid tests will. PCR tests are readily available in our community. In addition, you may order 10 rapid tests per month per household by clicking here. Tests are shipped via Amazon and arrive within days typically. You may also pick up rapid tests at the school office during school hours. With COVID on the rise again, to help us remain open and in-person, please be sure to remain home if you have symptoms; we encourage masking while at school.
2022-2023 School Year Tuition Contracts Due ASAP
Most tuition contracts, along with financial aid contracts have been sent home and are now past due. Please fill them out completely, sign, and return them to the office as soon as possible. You can do this in-person, through the mail, or via email. Please call the office with any questions or concerns.
