WOH For Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Advanced Technology: Drones by Tim Allen, Middle School Teacher

Many of us are aware of drone technology, but how many of us can actually say we know how they operate? We thought the perfect opportunity to explore this would be in our middle school advanced technology elective, and our students were very supportive of that idea. Mrs. Okabayashi, technology director Kevin Jones, and I researched this together and determined which drones would best fit our needs.

We purchased 6 sets of DJI Tello drones, which are small, sturdy drones with a built-in high quality camera. Each set included a drone, extra propellers, a video-game like controller, a VR headset, and a protective cage. These drones are controlled via Bluetooth and Wireless signals, connecting directly to the student iPads and can be flown very easily with the camera’s picture appearing on the screen for ease of piloting. The students each paired up with 1 or 2 other members of the class and have gotten to get in the cockpit, so to speak, and fly these drones all over the school (as long as they aren’t distracting other classes J). It has been so fun to see students engage with these drones this trimester; in the future we hope to use them for many different purposes, including taking high quality aerial videos and pictures of sporting events, in the school, in chapel, along with creating many different tasks/challenges for the drones to complete, all under the expert piloting of our students!

View a short video of students with the drones here!
