Preschool by Christina Figgins, Preschool Director
Preschool is so fun! Sometimes I have to pinch myself because I love being a preschooler; I mean I love teaching the preschoolers. Our job is to explore the world around us through play. Here are some ways we do that:
- One way we learn about working through conflict is by acting it out with puppets.
- We use a sand timer to remind us to wait for our turn.
- Playdough and clay are fun to pound on, stretch, poke…
- We use our fingers to make doodles, letters, and silly faces in shaving cream (and it feels really great).
- Building a tall block tower without it falling over.
- But the falling over part is pretty cool too.
- There is a balance beam and stepping stones to figure out how to balance.
- When we learn the alphabet we turn the letters into animals and make funny sounds to match.
- In our science center we are learning about our senses – right now is the sense of sight.
- We have mirrors, colored glasses, a braille book, and magnifying glasses.
- For fall there is a big pumpkin house in the room and it is filled with books about fall, Halloween and silly monsters. It’s a cozy, quiet reading space.
- BUT, the most important things we learn in our Sea Star class are the FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
We are becoming a little family and becoming good friends. My job each year is to help preschoolers come to school and love it! Even though it looks like they are just playing they are doing some hard work each day. They are coming to school and figuring out how to get along with many other children, become more independent, and follow rules and routine. Here we are only two months in and we are cruising along. Never underestimate a preschooler! They amaze me daily!
