WOH For Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018
For our family, Thanksgiving is only slightly below Christmas in terms of favorite holidays. From the annual touch football game with friends in the morning, to the delicious smells of turkey and pumpkin pie cooking throughout the day, to evening board games with family and friends, Thanksgiving showcases our family’s interests: sports, food, and games with people we love.
This year, we will host about 20 people around the Thanksgiving table (or a table plus two coffee tables actually). A priority for us is always inviting those “extra” friends who don’t have family in the area, and so this year we will have our oldest son’s college roommate for the third year, our nephew’s girlfriend for the first time, and one or two other “extras”, in addition to the usual friends and family. These guests often have their own traditions that they have grown up with, and somehow they meld into our household traditions too! Danny the college roommate has a surprising talent for peeling potatoes which he honed from years of practice at his home in California, and so now that is his designated contribution to our dinner. The nephew’s girlfriend Hanna follows a vegan diet, and so we are changing the menu just slightly to make her feel welcomed as well.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, we have much to be thankful for. I pray that we all have room at our tables and in our hearts for these “extras”. Happy Thanksgiving!
