Creating Community by Sally Heit, Admissions Director
The word community has been on my mind these past few weeks; primarily, I’ve been thinking about how belonging to a community, whether it is in a group, city, neighborhood, church or school, gives you a feeling of being a part of something bigger than yourself. Life-long friendships are made, traditions are created, births and deaths are celebrated and honored, legacies are carried on, and lives are enriched when we are part of a larger community. And, we can add surviving a pandemic to the list of advantages of being part of a community.
Hope School and Seattle Lutheran High School are great examples of shared community. Long before these two school boards began discussing a permanent union, Hope students continued their education as freshmen at SLHS, attended sporting events, and observed class debates and J-Term (January Term) project fairs. SLHS students have volunteered in Hope classrooms as teacher assistants, summer camp counselors, and have volunteered numerous hours at Hope completing their senior projects. Not to mention the dedicated alumni of both Hope and SLHS that have returned to volunteer, coach, or teach at either school. Students at both schools have benefited from the support, love, and experience that our two strong communities have provided them both in and out of school.
When parents look for the “right fit” in a school for their student, often they are not only looking for academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and faith, but also a place where they will belong and make those life-long connections. Hope and SLHS are those communities. On November 16 we’ll welcome new families to our All-School Open House. Invite families you know who are looking for that “just right” school to join us and show them what it looks like to belong to our incredible community at Hope, which has been going strong for over 60 years!

I encourage you to refer a new family to Hope School and invite them to meet us next Tuesday at our All School Open House. It’s never too early to think about learning opportunities for your student(s) for the coming Fall. Families will meet the administrative staff, teachers from preschool, elementary and middle school, and hear about how Hope School is conducting in-person in this uncertain time of Covid19. To attend the event, register through this link: https://forms.gle/1coHMjAJCEh1gowF6.

Hope Basketball – Athletes and Assistant Coaches Needed
The girls and boys basketball teams will begin practicing in mid-November. The girls team head coach will be Anthony Stordahl, and the boys team head coach will be Scott Okabayashi. Practices and games are 2-3 days per week during the season, which runs mid-November through LEST in mid-February. Contact Mr. Goodspeed at mgoodspeed@hopeseattle.org if you have questions or want to volunteer.
Mr. Goodspeed is working on practice and game schedules which will be released soon, along with more information about the season and safety protocols. Athletic registration information is available here.
