Teacher Training by Kristen Okabayashi
Hope Lutheran School is part of a larger Lutheran district, including about 35 schools in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Idaho. The district office in Portland, Oregon, sets up teacher professional development opportunities each year for all schools at a conference, typically located in beautiful Seaside, Oregon. The topics and workshops change from year to year based on school interest and decisions of the planning committee.
This year’s conference was wonderful as usual. Teachers had the choice of attending various workshops on a variety of topics including reflective teaching practices, “flipping” classrooms, proficiency-based learning, and building classroom community, among many other workshops. Hope teachers had time to collaborate together and build community within our teaching staff during the drives to and from Seaside and the limited free time during the conference. And the sunny weather this year was an added bonus!
We are not a school that is content to teach “as we’ve always taught” and so it’s really important for us to continue to challenge ourselves as educators to do our best, so we can then help our students in turn do their best!

LEST Drama Begins Tomorrow Oct. 24 – Grades 5-8
This is a reminder that auditions for the 2018/2019 LEST drama team are being held tomorrow, October 24, in the Hope Church commons from 3-5 PM. Students need to bring a snack and be prepared to be an attentive audience and participant in the process. If you get a part you must be able to commit to every rehearsal and the competition in Portland, OR during LEST February 14-17. Due to the extremely high interest, we are anticipating that we will not be able to offer a part for everyone this year.
Please know that LEST drama is just one part of the drama program at Hope, with other opportunities including the spring drama which promotes improv games and a fun production, an elective for middle school at times, and this spring our students will have the opportunity to have a small part in the Seattle Lutheran High School musical production February through April.
If you have questions please contact Mrs. Norton, LEST drama director, at mnorton@hopeseattle.org.

Hope Church Events This Sunday, October 28
First Communion Class – 9:30 A.M. – Children in 5th grade and older are invited to learn the basic teachings of our Lutheran Christian belief about the Lord’s Supper. One or both parents (or a close relative) are expected to join their children in the class. Class will meet for four weeks at 9:30 a.m. in Room 212, on the 2nd floor of the school. Pre-register by contacting Deacon Dan Jackson at djackson@hopeseattle.org.
Family Faith Event – 9:30 A.M Bring The Whole Family – All ages are welcome to meet in Hope’s Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. to assemble school kits for Lutheran World Relief. (No childrens’ Sunday School classes this Sunday.)
Bible Blessings For Third Graders – 10:30 A.M. Service – On Reformation Sunday we continue this wonderful tradition of presenting third grade students with a Bible during the 10:30 a.m. worship service. We have made it more personal by asking you as parents to pick out a new Bible and write a special message in the front of it for your child. If you have recently given your child a Bible or if you would like to use the one that some of you purchased to use at school, that will work as well. Contact Family Life Minister, Patra Mueller, if you would like to participate or if you have questions patramueller@hopeseattle.org
